Yes. Mountain Valley Health Plan covers ABA therapy as part of the Medi-Cal Behavioral Health Treatment (BHT) benefit for members under 21. The plan manages behavioral health directly: to request BHT or ABA services, it requires an order from a licensed physician or psychologist and prior authorization. Because this is a Medi-Cal benefit, there are no copays, deductibles, or out-of-pocket costs for eligible families.
California's Medi-Cal policy covers all medically necessary BHT for children and young adults under 21 under the federal EPSDT benefit. An autism diagnosis is not required when a licensed physician, surgeon, or psychologist determines that BHT is medically necessary, and the plan's own member materials note that the benefit also covers children without an autism diagnosis where medically indicated.

Mountain Valley Health Plan is not a separate company. It is the name Health Plan of San Joaquin uses in El Dorado and Alpine counties, where it began serving Medi-Cal members on January 1, 2024. The plan is a not-for-profit public plan governed by the San Joaquin County Health Commission, with a local office in Placerville.

Mountain Valley Health Plan requires an order from a licensed physician or psychologist before ABA can be authorized. Your pediatrician or primary care provider can write it. If you are not sure how to ask, contact us and we will walk you through what the plan needs.
Complete our Get Started form or call us. We confirm your child's Mountain Valley Health Plan coverage, gather the order and any evaluations you already have, and coordinate directly with your provider and the plan. You can also call the plan's Behavioral Health line and ask for a referral to Behavia Therapy.
A BCBA meets your child and family, usually in your home, to understand strengths, needs, and daily routines. The assessment becomes the treatment plan the plan reviews.
We submit the treatment plan and required documentation to Mountain Valley Health Plan and follow up on the request. Timelines depend on the plan's review, and we keep you informed along the way.
Once authorized, sessions start on a schedule that fits your family, with ongoing BCBA supervision and regular progress reviews. Reauthorizations are handled by our team.

Alta California Regional Center (ACRC) serves El Dorado, Alpine, Sacramento, Placer, Nevada, Sierra, Sutter, Yuba, Yolo, and Colusa counties. It coordinates Early Start services for children under three and Lanterman Act services for eligible children and adults, and many El Dorado County families first hear about ABA from an ACRC service coordinator.
For a child with Medi-Cal, Mountain Valley Health Plan is the primary payer for ABA. California policy makes managed care plans responsible for medically necessary BHT and treats regional centers as payers of last resort. ACRC and the health plan coordinate around each other rather than competing, and if your child has an ACRC service coordinator we are glad to work with them.
